CHC was contracted by Saint John’s County to design, permit, and rebuild 17 miles of dunes along the St. Johns County Atlantic Ocean shoreline. These dunes suffered erosion damage during Hurricanes Matthew (2016) and Irma (2017), which left upland structures and ecosystems at an elevated risk of future erosion impacts. The project entailed design, permitting, transportation, and placement of over 400,000 CY of beach quality sand, and the installation of over 1,600,000 dune plantings. All stages of the design and construction process were completed in direct coordination with Saint John’s County representatives. Additionally, an extensive flagging and MOT plan, both on highway and beachside, was required to manage the project’s logistical challenges. This project helped protect the upland infrastructure and provide additional habitat for native vegetation and wildlife.
