Georgia Ports Authority's Garden City Terminal project involved realigning Pipemakers Canal and constructing two rail bridges and a vehicle maintenance bridge, facilitating future rail expansion and enabling 10,000-foot trains to increase container capacity from 500,000 to 1 million lifts annually.

Port of Savannah IMMC Phase 2 – Bridges and Canal Realignment

This civil infrastructure project was part of the Georgia Ports Authority’s International Multi-Modal Connector (IMMC) project at the Garden City Terminal in Savannah, GA. CHC’s scope of work included the realignment of a portion of Pipemakers Canal, installation of 2 rail bridges across the realigned canal to accommodate future rail tracks, and the installation of a vehicle maintenance bridge across the canal. Canal realignment included temporary sheet pile wall, excavation of 35,000 CY, and the placement of riprap stone as bank stabilization.

The vehicle maintenance road consisted of 18-inch prestressed concrete piles, ASHTO girders, and concrete deck. The 2 rail bridges included 18-inch prestressed concrete piles, 300 box girders, waterproofing, and ballast stone. These bridges connect the Chatham and Mason rail yards, operated by CSX and Norfolk Southern railroads. This Mega Rail project will allow 10,000-foot trains to be loaded on terminal with containers double-stacked. The trains will increase the capacity from 500,000 container lifts per year to 1 million.
